LOS ANGELES – “I am very green,” remarked the charming Ryan Reynolds when we talked to him recently for the superhero film “Green Lantern” based on the comic book of the same title appearing in the DC comics.
Asked how eco friendly he was, the 34-year-old Canadian actor said, “I can safely say that I am very green. I drive 100 percent electric car. I have solar panels all over my house. I don’t draw energy from the city. I use grey water. I compost. I grew up in a household that was incredibly motivated to give a little bit back in terms of the environment. As far as clothes are concerned, I don’t wear vegan slippers to bed. But no, everything else I try to be a little bit aware of what I’m doing, what I’m consuming and all that stuff.”
Ryan, who portrays Hal Jordan, a test pilot for the United States Air Force who becomes the Green Lantern, talked about his unitard costume during the filming. “I got used to it,” he explained. “It’s a motion capture suit so it’s got a lot of different tracking markers on it and things like that so the computers can pick up your movements and map it perfectly for the film later. But no, you sort of look like a crash test dummy. I mean, you look like you just lost your Volvo. It’s a strange suit to be in but for the most part, it was comfortable and fine. But any time you’re shooting in Louisiana in July, no matter what you’re wearing, is going to be pretty awful and that thing felt like it was made out of just pure aggravation by the end as opposed to some sort of material.”
So if he had a super power, what would he like to have and what would he do for this world, we asked. “I’d probably create a three-party political system,” he kidded and then added, “Or maybe I’ll just keep my expectations modest and just make a decent lasagna.”
Turning serious, he said, “There’s a lot a super hero could do in a world like this and that’s one of the reasons that these movies appeal to such a huge audience. It’s a wish fulfillment. We all wish that someone would come save the day to some degree and that’s also the origins of superman really. They created this character to make people feel better, escape for a moment. It was this guy who’s going to come and save everyone. It’s kind of exciting so I love being part of this. As for my superpower, I do like what Hal Jordan has. I mean, to be able to create anything at your will would be kind of exciting not just for me but I can create some entertaining things for you, too.”
