A wise man once said, "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows," but these days, a guide through the seemingly endless flurry of pop culture is just what we need. With that in mind, here is what's on the radar screen in TV, music and film for the coming week.
MOVIES
Big release: Green Lantern (June 17).
Big picture: Kermit the Frog spoke (i.e., sang) the harsh truth: It ain't easy being green. For recent Canadian examples, see Stephane Dion's Green Shift plan -or watch Seth Rogen in The Green Hornet. And now, another Canuck goes green, as Ryan Reynolds takes an ancient alien oath to fight crime as the Green Lantern.
Forecast: He's no Downey Jr., but Reynolds has enough natural charm and charisma to elevate a superhero blockbuster. The only limits may be found in the hero he's set to portray. No mutant powers, gamma radiation or radioactive spiders here, folks. Just a man who inherits a ring that "turns thoughts into reality," and becomes part of a bejewelled clan of intergalactic, no-nonsense boy scouts. Where is the pathos, the angst, the inner demons?
"Its limits are only what you can imagine," a fish-headed alien and fellow Green Lantern tells Reynolds of his new ring. Maybe he can use it to convince soonto-be ex-wife Scarlett Johansson that he's cooler than her most recent lover, Sean Penn.
Reynolds could very well see green at the box office. With Scarlett a single woman, he'll also likely continue to be green with envy.
